A pair of 100mL samples of water are taken from a well bored into a large underground salt NaCl deposit. Sample #1 is from the t

op of the well, and is initially at 32°C. Sample #2 is from a depth of 50.m, and is initially at 42°C. Both samples are allowed to come to room temperature (20.°C) and 1atm pressure. An NaCl precipitate is seen to form in Sample #1.
a. A bigger mass of NaCl precipitate will form in Sample
b. A smaller mass of NaCl precipitate will form in Sample
c. The same mass of NaCl precipitate will form in Sample #2.
d. No, precipitate will form in Sample #2.
e. I need more information to predict whether and how much precipitate will form in Sample #2.

Answer:

The correct is A (A bigger mass of NaCl precipitate will form in Sample #2)

Explanation:

From the question we are told that

The volume of each sample is V_1 = V_2-V= 250 mL

The temperature of sample one is T_1 = 32^oC

The temperature of sample two is T_2 = 42^oC

The depth from where sample two is gotten is d = 50 \ m

The final temperature of the samples is T_f = 20^oC

The final pressure is P_f = 1atm

From the data given we see that the initial temperature of sample 2 is more than sample 1 so more NaCl will be dissolved in 2

Now when both samples are brought to T_f there will be a greater decrease in temperature in sample 2 than in sample 1 so more precipitate of NaCl will be formed in sample 2 than in sample one

How many free ions are there on the products side of the total ionic equations that results from the reaction between bismuth 3
abruzzese [7]

Given that the reaction is between Bismuth(III) hypochlorite and acetic acid.

Molecular equation for the reaction can be represented as:

Bi(OCl)_{3}(aq)+3CH_{3}COOH(aq)-->(CH_{3}COO)_{3} Bi(aq)+3HOCl(aq)

Total ionic equation for this reaction is: Bismuth(III) hypochlorite ionizes completely in solution where acetic acid being a weak acid partially ionizes in solution. On the product side, bismuth acetate being a salt completely ionizes to give 3 acetate ions and 1 bismuth ion. The other product is hypochlorous acid which ionizes partially in solution being a weak acid.

Bi^{3+}(aq)+3OCl^{-}(aq)+3CH_{3}COOH(aq)-->3CH_{3}COO^{-}(aq)+Bi^{3+}(aq)+HOCl(aq)

Therefore, there are 4 free ions (3CH_{3}COO^{-} and one Bi^{3+}) on the product side of the reaction.

Complete and balance the equation for this reaction in acidic solution.

BrO−3+Sb3+⟶Br−+Sb5+
Irina18 [472]

Answer:

6 H⁺ + BrO₃⁻ + 3 Sb³⁺ ⟶ Br⁻ + 3 H₂O + 3 Sb⁵⁺

Explanation:

Step 1: Write the unbalanced reaction

BrO₃⁻ + Sb³⁺ ⟶ Br⁻ + Sb⁵⁺

Step 2: Identify both half-reactions

Reduction: BrO₃⁻ ⟶ Br⁻

Oxidation: Sb³⁺ ⟶ Sb⁵⁺

Step 3: Perform the mass balance, adding H⁺ and H₂O where appropriate

6 H⁺ + BrO₃⁻ ⟶ Br⁻ + 3 H₂O

Sb³⁺ ⟶ Sb⁵⁺

Step 4: Perform the charge balance, adding electrons where appropriate

6 H⁺ + BrO₃⁻ + 6 e⁻ ⟶ Br⁻ + 3 H₂O

Sb³⁺ ⟶ Sb⁵⁺ + 2 e⁻

Step 5: Multiply both half-reactions by numbers that assure that the number of electrons gained and lost is the same

1 × (6 H⁺ + BrO₃⁻ + 6 e⁻ ⟶ Br⁻ + 3 H₂O)

3 × (Sb³⁺ ⟶ Sb⁵⁺ + 2 e⁻)

Step 6: Add both half-reactions and cancel what is repeated in both sides

6 H⁺ + BrO₃⁻ + 3 Sb³⁺ ⟶ Br⁻ + 3 H₂O + 3 Sb⁵⁺
