Explanation:

All the citizens lived in dwelling while the Giver lives in the Annex. The Annex is a small section attached to the backside of the House of the Old.

The dwellings are decorated in the general manner with furniture, no novels or art pieces on the walls. But the walls of the annex is decorated with numerous books, the fancy furniture, and rich fabrics.

The inner side of the dwelling is functional but monotonous and dull. The annex wall has a buzzer. Books like dictionary, Book of Rules and books describing offices and industries are present in dwellings, but Annex is filled with different books.
